For many non-religious people, there is no persuasive reason to believe. They don’t need a relationship with a god to understand the world or to live a meaningful life. Atheists can often present compelling arguments as to why they don’t follow a religion.

Here we look at some of the most common questions skeptics ask about Christianity.

One of the key areas where religion and science differ is that while the former requires faith, the latter requires proof. For many atheists, they want proof that God exists. But God is not a scientific explanation, so proving or disproving his existence is fundamentally difficult.

With war, disease, and disasters dominating the headlines, it is easy to understand that one of the most commonly asked questions that non-believers ask is why, if God exists, there is so much suffering in the world. The simple answer is that God allows suffering because it is a byproduct of sin.

For many non-believers, the fact that there are different religions and gods is perplexing and suggests that no one god exists. It is important to remember that religions are an evolutionary adaptation and, for centuries, people have perceived their god in different ways.

According to the Big Bang theory, around 14 billion years ago, the matter and energy in the universe hit a point of infinite temperature and density. By expanding rapidly, it led to the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets. In providing a scientific approach to the beginning of the world, atheists often question how there could have been a creator.

Another question atheists often ask is whether believers have doubts about their faith. We can all have moments of doubt, but faith can guide people through difficult and troublesome times.

Christianity is entrenched in the history and formation of Western society, and for many, it is the ‘true’ religion. But non-believers often want to know, with so many other faiths in existence, why and how it is the ‘true’ religion.

Atheists can question God’s part in the process of evolution. But for many believers, God used evolution as a way to develop life and to diversify the Earth, meaning God was the ultimate cause behind the evolutionary process.

Can Morals Exist Without Religion?

Believers and non-believers can all lead kind and compassionate lives, so the premise that morals cannot exist without religion is questionable.

People who don’t believe in any religion can struggle to understand how science and religion can co-exist. The truth is that if science and religion are understood properly, they can indeed stand side by side.

Humanists can reject the idea that the Bible is the word of God. They believe its human authors were uninformed and they question that if that wasn’t the case, then why does the Bible contain what they believe to be harmful teachings and errors?

For many believers, their faith in God helps take away fear and anxiety, and, through guidance, helps them live their best lives. However many non-believers struggle to comprehend how belief in God impacts someone’s existence.

Someone skeptical about the Bible and Christianity might ask a believer if they have any cause for concern about the veracity of the Gospels. Being asked difficult questions about Christianity and the message of the Bible is something a believer can find it difficult to provide answers to.
