As difficult as it is for Christians to understand, some people do not believe in God. They may have lost their faith along the way or were raised as atheists in a secular environment. Regardless, it’s important to talk to atheists about their viewpoints as well as express your own beliefs respectfully. But how can you answer an atheist’s questions? Here are 18 things every Christian should know.

Who Created God?

Christians believe that God has always existed and went on to create the universe and everything in it. God is eternal and has always existed and will always continue to exist. An atheist might justify their lack of belief in God by asking why a good God would allow suffering. It’s undeniable that immense suffering and tragedies are occurring on a daily and global scale. God might intervene periodically, but daily we are fully responsible for our own actions.

If God is all around us, an atheist may ask why we can’t see Him. After all, if God shows Himself, no one can argue that he doesn’t exist! As Christians, we have complete faith in God and do not need to see Him to believe in Him, although some people might feel God’s presence or sense Him. John 20:29 states, “Blessed are those who have not seen yet have believed”.

Christians believe that God created the universe and everything inside of it. The first book of the Bible, Genesis, explains in depth how and why life was created. Atheists tend to believe in evolution, a theory promoted by Charles Darwin that claims every life form has evolved and changed religious thought. There are some Christians who acknowledge evolution, however, and do not adopt a literal translation of the story of Creation.

There are two Creation accounts found in the Old Testament, inside Genesis 1 and Genesis 2. But the two Creations in Genesis complement one another and offer no contradictions. Some atheists love to scrutinize the Bible to look for contradictions and flaws to outline invalidity. Whilst the Bible is not free from all inaccuracies in the timeline of events, the Bible is created from the pens of many authors who each offered some unique insights into their storytelling. An example of inconsistencies is presented in the death of Judas Iscariot, described in Matthew 27:5 as a “hanging” but in Acts 1:18 as “falling”.
