Jesus is often regarded as a paragon of love, compassion, and humility. While we can’t all live our lives according to the Bible, many modern behaviors would likely leave Him shaking His head. Even if you choose not to follow a religion, life is about being the best version of yourself and not exhibiting bad behavior. Let’s look at some of the ways our modern ways of living might be troublesome to His teachings.

Ignoring the Needy

Jesus emphasized caring for the less fortunate, yet today, many ignore the homeless and hungry. It’s a sad fact to think that homelessness even exists in a world with such extreme affluence, but we don’t possess the power to change the world. However, we can do our bit to make their lives that little bit easier. Walking past someone in need without offering help would undoubtedly sadden Him.

Materialism

Accumulating wealth and possessions often takes priority in modern society. Sadly, we live in a consumerist society where material goods are valued more than a quest for inner peace. Jesus taught about the dangers of loving money more than God, so he’d be disappointed to see materialism overshadowing spiritual values.

Judging Others

‘Judge not, that you be not judged’ (Matthew 7:1). Despite these words, people are quick to judge others based on appearance, lifestyle, or beliefs. Social media platforms merely add to this issue by forcing us to compare ourselves to others. Based on his teachings, Jesus would remind us to be more understanding and less critical.

Spreading Hate

We’d all love to see the back of hate from both a micro and macro perspective. From self-love to honoring thy neighbor, Jesus preached love and forgiveness, yet hate speech and divisiveness are rampant in our modern world. He would be disheartened by the lack of love and the prevalence of hostility.

Neglecting the Sabbath

The Sabbath was made for rest and worship, but modern life often overlooks this day of rest, particularly for non-followers who treat it as nothing more than a day off work. Jesus would be disappointed to see how rarely people take time to pause and reflect. It doesn’t take a religious person to appreciate the benefits this could bring.

Lack of Forgiveness

Holding grudges and seeking revenge contradicts Jesus’ message of forgiveness. All will be forgiven if we choose to embrace forgiveness, yet hostility seems to be prevalent in modern society. Forgiveness is by no means easy, but it holds undeniable power for the holder. Choosing not to forgive carries a heavier burden.

Boasting and Vanity

Jesus valued humility above all else, yet modern culture often celebrates self-promotion and vanity. He’d likely frown upon social media’s endless stream of selfies and ego-rich posts. We’re victims of our culture, so we simply follow the crowds, but it tends not to serve us well when we’re inundated with cherry-picked highlights of perfect lives.

Ignoring the Environment

Caring for creation is a biblical principle, but today’s environmental neglect and exploitation would certainly disappoint Jesus, who would advocate for stewardship of the Earth. We’re all trying to do our bit for the planet, but some might argue that it’s out of necessity more than generosity.

Neglecting Prayer

Prayer was central to Jesus’ life, but in today’s hectic world, it’s often neglected. Prayer doesn’t need to be religion-based. It can be spiritual or simply a means of offering gratitude for all that we have. He’d encourage us to take time for reflection and connection with the divine.

Lack of Compassion

Jesus’ heart went out to the sick, the poor, and the marginalized. He’d be shocked to see the stark global divides between races, cultures, and genders and our overall indifference to others’ suffering. Modern acts of compassion exist in many ways, but the greater issues contradict His teachings on compassion and empathy.

Pursuing Revenge

‘Turn the other cheek’ (Matthew 5:39) is a core teaching of Jesus, urging us to overcome betrayal or wrongdoings in favor of inner peace. Life isn’t as easy as turning a blind eye, though modern society often glorifies revenge to an extreme degree. He’d be upset by our desire for retribution over reconciliation.

Corruption and Dishonesty

Honesty was integral to Jesus’ teachings, but we seem to live in a world where trust is hard-earned. From corrupt governments to untrustworthy police forces, we’re surrounded by modern examples of corruption, deceit, and dishonesty. It’s hard to adopt the right values when we’re influenced so heavily by unethical representations.

Neglecting Family

While many of us value the relationships we have with family, we can often take them for granted. Jesus valued family relationships and encouraged us to prioritize and cherish our loved ones. If we can learn anything from His teachings, religious faith or not, it’s that we’re blessed to have our loved ones and should make the most of our time together.

Racism and Discrimination

Jesus welcomed all people, regardless of their background. Racism and discrimination that occur across the globe, between countries, cities, neighborhoods, and individuals, starkly contradict His inclusive message of love and acceptance. It’s hard to believe that race and culture can impact perceptions so greatly in a modern world.

Greed and Excess

Jesus warned against the dangers of greed, and in many ways, he was right. Material possessions bring little in the way of real happiness, often prompting us to want more. Today’s culture of excess, where more is always better, would disappoint Him as it strays from a life of simplicity and generosity.

Violence and War

Jesus preached peace and nonviolence, yet the world is rife with conflict and war. It seems that we’re unable to turn on the TV these days without seeing global disarray with countries fighting to the bitter end. He’d be heartbroken by humanity’s inability to live harmoniously.

Ignoring Injustice

Jesus stood up for the oppressed and called for justice. Indifference to social injustices and inequality contradicts His call to love and advocate for others. Thankfully, modern society is moving in the right direction, with equality and inclusivity firmly making their way into our lives. Let’s hope that our fight for injustice can overpower the ignorance that exists among us.

Lack of Faith

In an increasingly secular world, faith is often sidelined in favor of spiritual practices or, in some cases, atheism or agnosticism. Jesus would encourage a return to spiritual practices and a deeper connection with God, though modern society might benefit from simply being the best it can be for themselves and all others. That would be a good start and requires no faith whatsoever.
