Secularism is on the rise in countries across the world. Being uninvolved with religion is especially pronounced among young people. In the United States, around one in three people under the age of 30 identify as atheists. While many have never believed, some are abandoning their religion as the growing influence of secularization takes hold.

But there are many reasons why people reject Christianity other than rising secularism. Here are several common reasons why people are ending their Christian journey.

Experiencing Pain, Loss, and Grief

Pain, loss, and grief can have huge impacts on our lives. During distressing emotional times, people can feel rejected by God, and start to lose their faith.

Experiencing Other Cultures and Religions

Experiencing different cultures and religions other than Christianity can lead to deconversion, as meeting people with different beliefs and backgrounds can have a challenging or changing impact on someone’s long-held beliefs.

We form new relationships all the time throughout our lives, new colleagues, new friends, new partners. Bonding with someone who doesn’t identify as a Christian can play a role in deconversion.

Religious doubt is part and parcel of the life of faith, but for some, the probing of their religion through uncertainties and inquiries, especially if they are left unanswered, can lead to an abandonment of their faith.

Any negative experience with the Church, such as rudeness, hostility, or neglect, can leave people feeling frustrated with Christianity and reluctant to continue practicing their faith.

Wanting to Break Free

Sometimes the loss of belief can be attributed to an individual wanting to break free from the routines and regulations surrounding being a Christian.

Sexual Desires

People who may experience a negative reaction to their sexual desires and preferences may be put off their religion, as they believe they will be perceived as unnatural or immoral.

Cultural Transformations

Culture and society is changing at a rapid pace, and issues considered ‘unchristian’ such as gender identity, terminations of pregnancies, and LBGTQ+ rights, can have a significant impact on individual beliefs.

Religious Scandals

Scandals involving religious individuals or institutions can rock the religion to its very core and have serious repercussions within the respective institution. For some believers, wrongdoing in the Church can result in a resentment of Christianity and the questioning of the faith.

Perception of Discord Between Science and Religion

Research by the Pew Research Center revealed that 59% of Americans say that science conflicts with religion. Being torn between the scientific and Biblical can be influential in people’s loss of the Christian faith.

Feeling Disconnected or Unwelcome

If a Christian congregation results in a person feeling isolated, or unwelcome, it can trigger a number of negative emotions and leave them feeling disconnected from their faith.

Seeking Authenticity

Authenticity in the Bible involves having a sincere faith in God, rather than merely going through the motions, and pretending to be a believer. For those who have doubts about the faith and are essentially going through the motions, they may seek authenticity and ask honest questions. Failing to be provided with the answers can result in a rejection of their faith.

Rising Secularism

The steady decline in religious beliefs is, according to British Social Attitudes (BSA), “one of the most important trends in postwar history.” The growing prioritization of humanist values over secular ones can be an influencing factor in someone deciding to reject their Christian beliefs.

Moving Away from Their Church

For someone who may have attended the same church for most of their lives, relocating can be the trigger a move away from the church entirely, and even to abandon Christianity.

Personal Beliefs Evolve

As we grow emotionally, intellectually, and physically, our beliefs today can be inherently different than they were ten years ago. The process of self-discovery and new experiences and beliefs can lead some people away from the Christian faith.

Political Issues

There is a belief that the Church has become more politicalized. As Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, wrote in the Huffington Post, politics and church are risky things to do at the same time. For some, the politicization of the church is off-putting and can help lead to an abandonment of their faith.

Life Priorities Take a New Course

As we move through life, priorities and values constantly change. Sometimes new priorities like a young family, a demanding job, or new hobbies can mean Christianity takes a backward step.

Influence of Friends

The influence of those around us should never be underestimated, and non-believing friends and family can be influential when it comes to our own Christian beliefs.

Reflections of the Attributes of God

In facing doubts or niggles about the Christian faith, people can reflect on the attributes associated with God, particularly when they are caught up in personal tragedy or something that has had a profound impact on their life.

Access to Instant Information

We are living in times when access to information has never been so abundant and instant. While digital media and information can be positive, it can have negative repercussions on Christianity and other religious beliefs. With information at their fingertips, people have access to alternative views, which can challenge the Christian orthodoxy.

Issues Involving Inclusivity

Whether Christianity can be truly inclusive is a question long asked among believers and non-believers. For some, the fear or perception that Christianity is not inclusive and embracive of people of all color, gender, ethnicities, and backgrounds, can be disconcerting and even enough to mean they abandon their faith.

Seeking Spiritual Experiences Over Religious Ones

Spiritual practices such as meditation, Yoga and more, have become progressively more mainstream in recent years. Seeking spiritual encounters and collaborating with other people more spiritually, can lead to the demise in someone practicing religious activities such as going to church.
