When you think of religion and science, you may perceive both factions as opposite ends of the spectrum. But did you know scientists agree with many aspects presented in the Bible? The worlds of religion and science truly collide in our fascinating study.

Here are 17 compelling concepts that you might not be aware of but definitely need to know.

Sanitary Practices

Leviticus 11:28: “The one who carries their dead bodies should wash his garments and he will be unclean until the evening. They are unclean to you.

The Bible makes clear to the reader that they must clean their garments and their bodies after touching a dead body, safely disposing of human waste. Scientists agree that dead bodies carry diseases.

Quarantining Infection

Leviticus 13:5: “The priest will then examine him on the seventh day, and if it appears that the infection has stopped and has not spread to the skin, the priest will quarantine him for another seven days.

There is a solid understanding of infectious diseases such as leprosy in the Bible, explaining the need to quarantine leprosy sufferers for a specific period of time.

Tectonic Plate Movements

Psalm 104:6: “You covered it with deep waters as with a garment. The waters stood above the mountains.

Psalm 104:6 explains that the mountains used to be under the ocean and have risen from the waters. This supports the concept that movements were made by tectonic plates and continental collision over time.

Weather Processes

Job 36:27, 28: “He draws the drops of water; they condense into rain from his mist; then the clouds pour it down; they shower down upon mankind.

Job 36: 27, 28, explores the concepts of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, key geological components of weather and the water cycle.

Planetary Positioning

Job 26:7: “He stretches out the northern sky over empty space, suspending the earth upon nothing.

When many ancient communities and theories assumed the world was flat or held by a giant in the sky, Job 26:7 confirms that the Earth is suspended over empty space.

The Beginning of the Universe

Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth.

Disputing myths and legends, Genesis 1:1 explains that there was a beginning to the Universe. Regardless of the source of creation, both the Bible and Science both agree that the Universe had a beginning.

The Life of Flesh

Leviticus 17:11: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood.

The Bible supports modern medical science and the importance of blood to the health and life of the individual. Many other ancient cultures did not recognize the vitality of blood, although scientists today recognize blood as the lifeforce of the human body.

Existence of Light

Genesis 1:3: “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”

The Bible explains that light was created before the creation of the sun. This is supported by science, which confirms that photons were present before stars in the origin of the first light in the Universe.

Water Purity

Leviticus 15:11: “Anyone whom the one with the discharge touches without having rinsed his hands in water shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening.

Leviticus 15:11 endorses the need for good handwashing and the purity of water in washing away germs and bacteria. Science endorses handwashing as a central component of personal hygiene.

Biblical Floods

Genesis 7:17: “And the flood was forty days upon the Earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lifted up above the Earth.

Whilst some people might view the story of Noah’s Ark as a myth, geological evidence backs up this tale. Rising sea levels in ancient times did happen, as supported by geological markers.

Expanding Universe

Isaiah 40:22: “It is he who sits above the circle of the Earth, and  its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the Heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in.

Isaiah 40:22 mentions stretching out the Heavens, making the Heavens larger and wider. This reflects the expanding Universe, which scientists support as a cosmological foundation.

Man Formed From Dust

Genesis 2:7: “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

The Bible states that God created man from the dust of the Earth. Modern chemistry actually confirms that decomposed human bodies contain certain elements that are also found in the crust of the Earth.

Celestial Events

Matthew 2:2: “Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.

The star of Bethlehem could be a celestial event such as a supernova or a comet, creating plausible reasoning for this concept presented in the Bible.

Swarm of Locusts

Exodus 10: 12: “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.

Whilst plagues hitting Egypt may seem far-fetched, certain environmental conditions presented in nature can create such occurrences.

Parting of the Red Sea

Exodus 14:21: “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it to dry land. The waters were divided.

A well-known story of the Bible is the parting of the Red Sea, which may seem too extraordinary to actually occur. But fluid dynamic research purports that this phenomenon could happen, supporting a link between religion and science.

Dietary Advice

Leviticus 11:3: “Whatever divides the hoof and is cloven-footed and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat.

Leviticus 11:3 explains that herbivores are the safest animals to eat, describing their hooves and the fact that they “chew the cud”, originating as grass. This was because carnivores may have carried diseases, depending on the animals they had eaten.

Benefits of Fruit

Revelation 22:2: “On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

The Bible explains the benefits that fruit can give to the individual, offering health and nutritional benefits that science completely supports.

Although science and religion do not agree on everything, many agreements between science and religion should not be overlooked.
